Tatra Mountains

Tatra Mountains are the highest in Carpatian range. The highest peak is Gerlach (2655 meters), situated on slovak site. On polish site the highest are Rysy (2499 meters). Slovak mountains are bigger then this in Poland, so it is the reason why they are less crowded. In polish part tourism concentrates in Zakopane. In Zakopane, there is a funicular on Gubałówka and cable car on Kasprowy Wierch (1987 meters), built in 1935-1936. In a close period, because from 1936 to 1940, on slovak site, was built the cable car on Lomnicky Scit (Slovak name of this peak, altitude 2632 meters). In its last level, extremelly steep, from Skalnate Pleso (1722 meters) to the peak of Lomnicky Scit goes only one, small car (thats why it is a problem with booking tickets, so you have to be early enough to buy one, only at Skalnate Pleso). In Stary Smokovec there is a funicular, similar to that on Gubałówka. On Slovak site worth to mention is very practical solution of transportation problem. There is a special train. It is going from Tatranska Lomnica, via Stary Smokovec to Strbske Pleso. In Stary Smokovec there is a branching to a nearby Poprad, quite a big city.
